Muskrats to build Green Monster Replica ROBBIE MILLS MEMORIAL FIELD
PICTURED IS AN ARTIST’S RENDERING of the ‘Muskrat Monster,’ a replica of Fenway Park’s
Green Monster that will highlight a new wave of renovations to Robbie Mills
Field in Laconia this summer as the Laconia Muskrats enter their third season
in the annual New England Collegiate Baseball League. The new left-field wall
with stand 17 feet tall and 90 feet wide, equipped with a party deck where fans
can enjoy food and the organization’s newest attraction: ice cold beer
concessions. COURTESY PHOTO LACONIA — The Laconia Muskrats have announced the
construction of a replica Green Monster that will be added to Robbie Mills
Field. The ‘Muskrat Monster’ will be an imposing 17 feet tall and 90 feet in
length. Attached to the back side of the Monster will be the Muskrats Party
Deck where fans can watch the game and enjoy the newest menu item at Robbie
Mills Field: ice cold beer. Dunkin’ Donuts of Laconia, led by Mark Cafua, has
signed on as the Muskrat Monster’s premier sponsor.
“We couldn’t convince Terry Francona to manage our club this summer so we brought
another part of Fenway up to the Lakes Region,” Muskrats General Manager Noah
Crane said in a release.
This is the second time in three
years that the Muskrats are making improvements to Robbie Mills Field. In 2010,
when the team entered the NECBL, major renovations took place to make the
facility ready for summer collegiate baseball. The outfield fences were pushed
back, the dugouts were extended, a press box was built and two large sets of
bleachers were added. The latest renovations are designed specifically to
increase the fan experience at the park.
“We have slowly transformed an
underused facility into one of the best baseball fields in the state, if not
all of New England,” Crane said. “The City of Laconia and the people of the
Lakes Region have been great to us and this is one way we can say thanks.”
The Muskrats are working with many
members from the Lakes Region Builders and Remodelers Association to construct
the Monster and Party Deck. Construction will begin in mid-May.
“The Muskrats are incredibly grateful for the willingness of LRBRA members to give of their time and
expertise to work on this project,” Crane said. “This project is truly a
community wide effort and the citizens of the Lakes Region are the
beneficiaries.”
The Lakes Region Builders and Remodelers Association member companies
bring a wealth of knowledge and skilled local labor to the table, enabling Muskrats management one-stop shopping for all facets of the construction project. With advice and council from Fluet Engineering Associates — which designed the 2010 stadium expansion for the Muskrats — the architectural plans were drawn up by ardent Muskrat fan Rob Turpin, of Misiaszek & Turpin Architecture of Laconia. Rist-Frost-Shumway Engineering then created the detailed engineering drawings for City Planning Board approval, and LRBRA member, Larry Greeley, of Tradesmen Builders Corp and a host family for the Muskrats, accepted the responsibilities as General Contractor, orchestrating the efforts of participating LRBRA member companies.
After that, Lakes Region Builders
Association members lined up to get the work done. Muskrats sponsor Belknap
Landscape Co., Inc. stepped up for the site work portion, including excavation
and landscaping for the project, preparing the site for Southern N.H. Poured
Concrete Construction, Inc. Gilford Well Co., Inc. previously installed the
field irrigation and agreed to reconfigure the sprinkler system when
construction is completed. Materials for the project are being provided by
Middleton Building Supply, Pella Windows and Doors, Uncle Hilde’s Lumber Outlet
and — for the very important green paint — The Home Beautiful. Skilled labor, a
key ingredient in a project of this magnitude, will be supplied by member
companies Steeplechase Custom Homes, LLC, Hayward & Company Log &
Timber Homes, Wood & Clay Inc. and K.A. Clason Fine Woodworking,
complemented by students from all over the Lakes Region who attend the Building
Construction classes at the Laconia High School Huot Technical Center.
“The members of Lakes Region
Builders and Remodelers Association are dedicated to helping our local
organizations with their building projects,” said Julie Hayward, LRBRA
Association President and owner of Hayward & Company Log & Timber
Homes. “Our diversified group of builders and associate members are focused on
using their professionalism to help improve our local communities. The
opportunity to work with the City of Laconia and the Laconia Muskrats to bring
the ‘Green Monster’ project into reality is what our association is all about!”
On February 22, the Laconia Parks
Commission granted approval to the Muskrats to sell beer during the 2012
season. The new Party Deck on the Monster will allow for the vending and
consumption of beer in addition to the other food offerings available to
Muskrat fans. The Party Deck will house beer and food vendors, counter space
along the Monster, and a section of Monster Seats. The Deck will be 48 feet
wide and 42 feet deep and will be accessed by a ramp just past the Muskrats
Ticket Booth.
“The goal of the Party Deck is to attract the 21-to- 35-year-old crowd by
creating a unique environment to watch a game,” Crane said. “The Party Deck is a great place to bring a date or get together with friends for outstanding baseball, cold beer, and delicious food.”
The 2012 NECBL season begins on June
7 and Muskrats Opening Night is Friday, June 8, at 6:30 p.m. Season tickets are
still available and are only $50. Season tickets can be purchased at the
Official Team Store of the Laconia Muskrats: Green Monster Sports in Tilton.
More information, game schedules and the team roster are all at www.laconiamuskrats.com.
The
Lakes Region Community Emergency Response Team (LR-CERT) recently graduated 8
local citizens from the 8-week disaster preparedness course, including our own
John Nichol!! John is the tall fellow, second from the right. Graduates are
invited to apply to the team. As a member, John will be asked to provide
support to local first responders and the community in the form of traffic
control, sheltering, fire rehab, search and rescue etc., in times of disaster.

Huot Center
Students Learn From Local Builders
(Lakes
Region – February 7, 2012)     The Lakes Region Builders
& Remodelers Association, known as the LRBRA, includes the Lakes Region’s
finest designers, builders, remodelers and associated businesses related to the
local building industry. The LRBRA organizes several community projects each
season and just finished, with the assistance of Laconia
High J. Olivia Huot Center students, a custom-built bob house.
Dale Squires,
LRBRA Executive Director from Member company Belknap Landscape said "This
is another example of local builders working together to engage local youth.”
and continued, “Huot students in the construction trades had a chance to work
side by side with local builders who are potential employers, priceless for
these kids. Better yet, this custom bob house is to be given away on-air by the
Nassau Broadcasting radio stations, notably 104.9FM The Hawk.” Adding,
“Altogether, this draws further attention to the 2012
Great Rotary Fishing Derby and the charitable efforts of the Meredith
Rotary Club.”
The cost of
the materials was shared by Middleton Building
Supply in Meredith, Southern New
Hampshire Poured Concrete Construction, Inc. and the LRBRA.
Once the
materials were ordered from Middleton Building Supply and delivered February 1st
to the Huot construction shop, Member builder Larry Greeley of Tradesman Builders Corp and Huot Instructor Matt Towle
directed the student’s construction efforts. In a single day the structure was
completed and the bob house was displayed on the LHS Campus front lawn.
The LRBRA
bob house will be awarded on February 11th at Meredith’s 2012 Great Rotary
Fishing Derby to one of thousands of entries through opportunities presented on
104.9FM The Hawk and at participating area merchants.
Lakes Region
Builders and Remodelers Association is a local trade organization providing
